Aquatic Therapy Boot Camp only and not
the main class being offered that weekend
A 4-hour training module designed to serve as a fast-paced, hands-on lab of aquatic therapy fundamentals. Strongly recommended to all new ATU students, especially those with less than 1 year of aquatic experience. May be used as a supplemental course for individuals looking for greater awareness of “why water works” therapeutically or for individuals looking for extra CEU hours -- at no additional cost.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Demonstrate an appropriate aquatic handling technique under 1-2 of the following therapeutic scenarios: non-weight-bearing, hydrophobic, asymmetric center of buoyancy, fragile skin, hypersensitivity to touch, non-verbal communication, poor head and trunk righting skills, aspiration risk (lab)
2. Demonstrate 1-2 aquatic therapy tasks which capitalize on hydrodynamic and thermal properties of water (lab)
3. Alter movement difficulty by manipulating 2-3 of the following: buoyancy, velocity, streamlining, levers, frontal surface area, and momentum (lab)
4. Design 3-4 therapeutic movements, tasks, or exercises using fundamental hydrodynamic and thermal principles (lab)
5. Recite 8-10 general precautions and contraindications to aquatic therapy (lecture)
6. Visually identify 8-10 types of aquatic therapy equipment and use that equipment appropriately in at least 1 situation in water (lab)
7. Verbally identify 4-5 aquatic specialty techniques (such as Watsu®) and where to obtain additional information on these techniques (lecture).
