Water-Based Intervention for the Musculoskeletal Client: An Aquatic Therapy Primer

ABOUT THIS 2 DAY SEMINAR

Designed to rapidly introduce clinicians to novel aquatic treatment ideas for the musculoskeletal patient. Will provide an overview of treatments pertinent to pediatric, adult and geriatric practices. Includes a “sampler lab” of the most clinically useful elements of popular aquatic specialty techniques and research findings which support aquatic therapy for the musculoskeletal client.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. Demonstrate 1-2 aquatic tasks or activities from each of the following specialty techniques (as each relates to the musculoskeletal client):

Aquatic adaptations of the Berg
Salzman Blanket Drills
Aquatic manual therapy and stretching
Aquatic yoga + pilates
Plyometrics
Functional skills training
Progressive resistive exercise
Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF)
Trunk stabilization
Clinical applications of Watsu (lab)

2. Working with a partner, design and implement a 15-minute aquatic treatment plan (including equipment selection) for 1-2 of the following:

s/p fracture, internal trauma, sprain, strain or dislocation
s/p joint replacement (e.g. TKR)
s/p tendon or ligament repair (e.g. ACL)
arthritis
chronic pain syndromes (e.g. fibromyalgia)
back and neck dysfunction (lab)

3. Describe why aquatic therapy may be the treatment of choice if (a) the patient is difficult to support or handle, (b) the patient is in pain, or (c) if the therapist cannot adequately access the patient’s body on land, (d) the patient has LE swelling (lecture).

4. Recite 3-4 aquatic precautions and contraindications specific to the musculoskeletal patient (lecture).

5. Locate what payers (including Medicare) have to say about aquatic therapy for the musculoskeletal patient (lecture).

6. Make a 3 minute verbal “case” for providing aquatic therapy services for a patient with a specific musculoskeletal condition. Be able to identify and locate supportive research to bolster case (lecture).

7. Progress a specific aquatic task from a lower level of function towards increased independence (lab)

8. Perform 3-4 aquatic therapeutic movements, tasks, or exercises designed to:

increase strength
improve ROM
decrease pain and muscle spasm
improve trunk stability
improve posture, weight-bearing, balance, gait and proprioception
improve functional skills (lab)

ONSITE TRANSPORT: There is no shuttle service, so you will want to rent a car if you fly in. There are such wonderful artist communities and hiking trails, you will need a car anyway. You can rent a room so cheap, you can splurge elsewhere!

ACCOMMODATIONS: We are so excited. This seminar is located at a spa called The Floating Stone. They have several pools of different temperatures including 2 Watsu pools built right in! The training pool is 40ish X 20ish, organic in shape, and is currently kept at 90 degrees. There are 2 Watsu pools on site and ALL of the water is ionized - drinking, swimming, showering, cooking, etc... no high-intensity chemical soup! It's a perfect venue for classes.

Charles Poston Inn Rooms

To go cheaper -- students may ask for these dorm-style accommodations which would mean you could stay for under $55/night (with 2 people sharing a room). Each person would have their own bed and semi-private living area (The host therapist Adrianne really recommends this option. It is the best deal and these rooms are BEAUTIFUL).

These rooms are located in the historic 1850s Charles Poston home. The walls are adobe and the flooring features the original tile. Two of the rooms come with fireplace and two with private patios. These rooms are free from the distractions of TV and phones; although, all have WiFi and a community center, including kitchen on site. Each room sleeps up to 4. Prices are based upon double occupancy.

Weekdays (Sunday-Thursday) – $129 x 20% ATU discount = $103.20 divided between 2 people = $51.60/person (plus tax)
Weekends (Friday-Saturday) – $139 x 20% ATU discount = $11.20 divided between 2 people = $55.60/person (plus tax)

Floating Stone Casitas

These one-bedroom, beautifully furnished, rentals are a 10 minute walk from the Floating Stone Inn & Aqua Spa. Each casita has its own separate kitchen, living room, bedroom, bath, private patio with shed, washer/dryer, (except Casita 1) satellite TV, WiFi, with a centrally located Jacuzzi to share. Sleeps up to 2 adults in a queen size bed. (Casita 1 has a King Bed and Casita 6 has a Queen pull out couch.) All prices are based upon double occupancy. Additional guests are $10 each.

ATU CREDENTIALING:

This is a 700 series class (teaches Entry Level/Intermediate skills). This class is a required class for individuals seeking ATU Credentialing in the Musculo Track. This class may also be used as an Elective for individuals seeking ATU Credentialing in General Studies.

CANCELLATION POLICY:

Programming Changes: Due to unforeseen circumstances, ATU schedules, instructors and/or meals may need to be changed without notice.

Cancellation of Class By ATU: ATU classes may be cancelled for low registration up to 30 days prior to the class. In this event, a full refund of class tuition or a voucher to another class will be issued to students. ATU does not reimburse change fees, airline tickets or any other travel related expenses, so please do not make plans until you receive the 30-day confirmation prior to the conference.

Cancellation of Class by Student: A refund, minus a $175 reseating fee, will be given for student cancellations made prior to 30 days before the conference. No refunds will be given for cancellations received after 30 day deadline. In the event of a student cancellation after the deadline, enrollment fees may be transferred to other ATU courses within 12 months at no charge.
